Santa Rosa American Viticultural Areas (AVAs)

Santa Rosa is located in Sonoma County, home to the following American Viticultural Areas (AVAs).

An American Viticultural Area (AVA) is a designated wine grape-growing region in the United States that has been recognized by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) for having unique geographic, climatic, and soil conditions that distinguish it from surrounding regions.

AVAs are used to identify and promote wine growing regions and to help consumers understand the unique characteristics of the wines produced in these areas. Wineries that use grapes grown within an AVA are allowed to list that AVA on their wine labels, provided that at least 85% of the grapes used were grown within the AVA.

Santa Rosa is not an AVA itself, but there are several AVAs within its vicinity that are known for producing high-quality wines. Here are the AVAs near Santa Rosa:

Alexander Valley AVA

Located northeast of Santa Rosa, this AVA is known for producing world-class Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varieties. Visitors can enjoy tours and tastings at the many wineries and vineyards in the area.

Russian River Valley AVA

Located west of Santa Rosa, this AVA is known for producing excellent Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines, as well as other cool-climate varieties. The region is also home to many small, family-owned wineries including Halleck Vineyard, which offers a more intimate Sonoma wine tasting experience that includes 8 different Sonoma wines paired with local, bite-size delicacies.

Sonoma Valley AVA

Located south of Santa Rosa, this AVA is known for producing a wide variety of wines, including Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel. Visitors can enjoy tastings at the many wineries and vineyards in the area, as well as explore the charming town of Sonoma and its historic plaza.

Petaluma Gap AVA

Located to the southwest of Santa Rosa, this AVA is known for its cool climate and produces Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah wines. The region is characterized by its wind and fog, which create a unique terroir for the grapes grown here.

Chalk Hill AVA

Located to the east of Santa Rosa, this AVA is known for its diverse soil types and produces a variety of wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. The region is also home to several high-end wineries and vineyards.
